Europe Day 2024: Luxembourg’s celebrations

As spring blossoms across Luxembourg, a palpable sense of excitement fills the air. Streets are adorned with flags, people gather in squares, and a festive spirit envelops the nation. Why? Because since 2019, May 9 marks a public holiday in Luxembourg: Europe Day.

Understanding Europe Day: a celebration of unity

Europe Day marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman declaration' of May 9, 1950, which set out his idea to unite European nations economically and politically, laying the groundwork for what would evolve into the European Union. This declaration laid the foundation for the European Coal and Steel Community, which would later become the cornerstone of the EU.

Commemorating Europe Day in Luxembourg

Luxembourg's Europe Day celebrations showcase the nation's unwavering commitment to European values. This year, festivities will be held by the European Commission and the European Parliament and include:

  • Traditional dances by several companies from all over the EU

  • An official ceremony, in the presence of His Royal Highness the Grand Duke Henri

  • A concert by the Luxembourgish band Hunnëg Strëpp

  • Foodtrucks, a choir, and activities for children all day long!

You’ll find more information here.

An extra surprise awaits you this year: not only will you have the unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at the European Parliament during the day, but you will also take part in the opening of the European Union's largest interactive information centre, the Europa Experience.

Double the fun?

This year, Europe Day falls on the same day as Ascension. What does it mean for you?

It means that you get two public holidays instead of one, and that you get an extra day’s compensatory leave. You can find more details at this link.

So, whether you're strolling through the streets of Luxembourg City or joining the celebrations at the European Parliament, take a moment to embrace the spirit of Europe Day. Let us celebrate our diversity, cherish our common values, and work towards a future where unity prevails, not just for ourselves but for generations to come. Happy Europe Day!
