Strong turnout at national demonstration: ALEBA stands with workers for fairness and respect

The streets of the capital echoed with slogans calling for fair pensions, true social dialogue, and dignity for all workers. “We are proud to have taken part in this strong and peaceful mobilisation, demonstrating once again that solidarity and the people’s voice remain one of the greatest strengths of our society,” said ALEBA President Roberto Mendolia.

Despite recent calls from UEL President Michel Reckinger not to demonstrate, claiming that the unions were trying to create alarmism by “spreading half-truths”, turnout far exceeded expectations — clear proof that Luxembourg's workers refuse to be ignored any longer.

Our participation in this national march reflects ALEBA’s unwavering commitment to defending the interests of all employees, beyond the financial sector. The issues raised today — pension reform, lack of social dialogue, inflation, salary stagnation, and declining quality of life — affect everyone, and they demand immediate, meaningful political action.

Responding to the criticism

In recent interviews, UEL President Michel Reckinger criticised the unions' decision to organise this demonstration, suggesting it was unnecessary and overly confrontational. ALEBA respectfully disagrees.

To say that such a large-scale mobilisation is unjustified is to turn a blind eye to the daily realities faced by thousands of working families in Luxembourg. Workers are not marching for the sake of ideology or agitation — they are marching because they are being asked to bear more and more of the burden, while their share of the prosperity continues to shrink.

It is not confrontation we seek, but recognition. Recognition that workers are not just economic variables — they are the backbone of the country’s success. If dialogue is truly valued by employers and government alike, then listening to today’s message is not optional — it is essential.

A call for action

The demonstration may be over, but the movement continues. We call on political leaders and employers to re-engage in honest, constructive dialogue with all social partners, and welcomes Prime minister Frieden’s invitation to the July 9 meeting. However, ALEBA deplores the fact that this invitation still does not reflect a full and fair representation of all social partners, by excluding a legitimate part of the Luxembourg staff representatives.

We urge the government to acknowledge the urgency of the situation and act — not with delay or dismissiveness, but with courage and respect. Luxembourg is at a crossroads. The road we choose next will define the country we want to live in tomorrow. ALEBA will remain vigilant, engaged, and committed to building a more just and equitable future — for all.

Summary

Strong turnout at national demonstration: ALEBA stands with workers for fairness and respect

On Saturday, June 28, ALEBA stood shoulder to shoulder with the country’s major trade unions and thousands of workers, pensioners, and citizens in a powerful demonstration in the streets of Luxembourg. United by shared convictions and a growing frustration, we made our voices heard: enough is enough.
