Being targeted by mobbing behaviour at work can be a stressful and isolating experience. But you don't have to face it alone. ALEBA stands firmly against mobbing and offers comprehensive support to its members.
In the realm of workplace dynamics, two terms often get conflated: mobbing and bullying. While both involve hostile behaviour directed at an individual, their nature, scale, and impact differ.
Mobbing, a term coined by Swedish psychologist Heinz Leymann, describes a sustained pattern of hostile behaviour aimed at systematically excluding or harming a target individual. It involves a group of individuals, often colleagues or superiors, engaging in repeated and coordinated actions to undermine, humiliate, and isolate the victim.
Bullying, on the other hand, typically involves a single individual or a small group exerting power over another individual to intimidate, harass, or threaten them. It may involve physical aggression, verbal abuse, or social exclusion.
Regardless of definitions, you shouldn’t remain idle if you’re faced with bullying! The first thing to do is to tell someone. It is also advisable to keep a detailed report of any incidents you experience, their context and possible witnesses. In practice, witnesses testimonies play a key role in courts.
