On February 26, we hosted a roundtable discussion focused on the important topic of pension reform in Luxembourg. We were pleased to see around 25 participants join us for what turned out to be a very productive and informative session.
Experts Jean-Jacques Rieff (Vice-President, ALEBA), Martine Birmann (Comité des Sages, ALEBA), Fabrizio Salucci (Comité des Sages, ALEBA), and David Questiaux (Chargé de Gestion Grands Comptes, Foyer Assurances) presented key aspects of the current system and the proposed changes. The discussion centered on the three pillars of Luxembourg's pension structure: social security, supplementary pension schemes, and individual retirement savings.
The necessity for reform, driven by the state of reserves and demographic shifts, was a primary focus. We outlined our position, emphasising the importance of maintaining the legal retirement age of 65 and the possibility of early retirement at 57. Central to our stance is the need for intergenerational solidarity, diversified funding, protection for low-wage workers, and the promotion of supplementary retirement savings.
Participants raised pertinent questions, including concerns about the impact of the reforms on early retirement eligibility, the economy's attractiveness, and the treatment of those with shorter employment periods. The timeline and specific changes of the reform were also points of inquiry.
The upcoming debates in the Chamber of Deputies, beginning in March, are a crucial next step. We reaffirmed our commitment to representing our members’ interests during this process. The roundtable served as a valuable forum for stakeholders to engage with the complexities of the pension reform, ensuring a more informed public discourse.
